John Cussans is a writer and artist whose work has included lecturing in Contextual Studies and Critical Theory at Chelsea College of Art, contributing to the 2nd Ghetto Biennale, Haiti, and writing a doctoral thesis titled, ‘Revolting Subjects and Epidemic Disorder: Georges Bataille, Heterology and Broadcast Horror’. Cussans’ lecture will provide an opportunity to rethink the ‘video nasty’: the term given to the often low-budget horror productions whose distribution on VHS in the early ’80s led to moral outrage in the British press and the prosecution of thirty-nine separate titles.
Among the prosecuted films was The Driller Killer (1979), Abel Ferrara’s tale of artistic alienation and financial struggle that sees its star Reno Miller embark on a drilling rampage in New York. London-based artist Vanessa Scully’s Driller Killer E2 (2012) is a semi-autobiographical remake of Ferrara’s original focusing on the difficulties faced by an artist (Jimmy McLean) resident in East London amidst the simultaneous gentrification of some areas and the relative poverty of others.
Scully’s film will be preceded by a number of artist ‘trailers’, some of which have been distributed on YouTube or Vimeo channels and which take inspiration from the ‘video nasty’, horror, recent current affairs or commercial pressures in the art world.
